Bacton Logistics Cuts Speed to Save Fuel and Reduce Emissions

The increased cost of fuel is one of the biggest challenges around at the moment and with uncertainty around further price rises, Bacton Logistics is taking steps to counter the impact by reducing the top speed of its vehicles from 56 to 53 mph.

The company is committed to reducing its carbon footprint, having invested in solar energy at their new Woolpit depot and solar supplies up to 90% of electricity requirements on site, including powering new electric forklifts and cars.

But the company’s single largest carbon output remains diesel emissions and any change in this area which can save fuel and reduce emissions is considered a step forward.

The company is also concerned to help customers through this difficult time. Although additional fuel costs are recoverable through surcharges, the emphasis is on improving efficiency to minimise the impact on transport costs to customers.


Edward Downie, Fleet Director, explained the change: “We have an obligation to ourselves, our customers and society in general to achieve the best possible fuel consumption from our vehicles. The decision to limit our fleet to 53mph will raise efficiency levels, further reduce accident risk and help to meet our carbon targets.” Bacton Logistics is already a Carbon Charter Bronze member with plans to apply for a Silver Award in the next 12 months.

The company has already trialled the new limit and found improved fuel usage with little impact on productivity and service. There is widespread evidence reduced speed also contributes to reduced stress and more enjoyable journeys for drivers. The change will be implemented to the whole fleet in the next twelve weeks as vehicles go in for service.
